10 Years of POP Editorial Services

August 26, 2016, marked POP Editorial Services’ 10th year in business. It’s hard to believe so much time has passed. Here is a brief look at what POP has done over the years.


August 26, 2006: POP opens for business with four projects in the queue

Spring 2007: The company is solvent after six months in business

June-August, 2007: POP moves to Austin, TX, for seven weeks of mayhem

Summer 2008: POP joins the St. Louis Publishers Association, takes on its first self-publishing client

August 2009: POP launches The POP Newsletter (blog)

January 2010: POP gives first presentation on working with editors, to the SLPA

April 2010: POP offers first workshop, “Sell Your Book!” followed shortly thereafter by “Publish That Book!”

September 24, 2010: Katherine Hinkebein becomes Katherine Pickett

December 2010: Katherine’s essay “Dented” is published by Lowestoft Chronicle and later anthologized

January 2012: Katherine becomes communications chair for the SLPA

August 2012: POP moves to Silver Spring, MD; joins the Editorial Freelancers Association and the Mid-Atlantic Book Publishers Association

December 2012: At seven months’ pregnant, Katherine begins writing Perfect Bound: How to Navigate the Book Publishing Process Like a Pro
January 2013: POP joins the Maryland Writers Association
January 2014: Katherine joins the board of MWA-Montgomery, taking over as chapter president in June
March 2014: Hop On Publishing LLC is formed as a subsidiary of POP Editorial Services LLC
May 2014: POP launches The Hop On Newsletter (monthly email newsletter)
September 1, 2014: Perfect Bound is published, hits Amazon bestseller list for Editing Reference two days later
October 2014: POP offers first webinar, “Publishing from the Inside Out”

March 2015: Perfect Bound wins silver in the Reference category at the IBPA Benjamin Franklin Awards

June 2015: Perfect Bound wins gold in the Writing category from the Foreword Reviews’ INDIEFAB Book of the Year Awards

Katherine writes the 30-page booklet Freelancing as a Business: 7 Steps to Take Before Launch Day, published by the EFA later that year

September 2015: Katherine is an invited speaker at the 10th annual Communication Central conference

October 2015: Katherine presents to an overflow crowd at the Beyond the Red Pencil conference, hosted by the Northwest Independent Editors Guild

February 2016: Katherine has her first commissioned article published in the IBPA Independent

August 2016: Katherine presents on working with self-publishers and serves as a mentor at the Editorial Freelancers Association’s national conference; more copies of Perfect Bound are sold here than at any other single event

Ten years in and I still truly enjoy what I do. It’s true, I wouldn’t give up POP for anything. This is my company and I believe in it. Here’s to another ten years!
