If you are looking for guidance with the organization of your book, tone, character development, or other big-picture items, developmental editing is essential. Making multiple passes through the manuscript, I will help guide overall organization of the book; evaluate pacing, narrative arc, character development, tone, and timeline; rearrange chapters; move or rewrite paragraphs and sentences; suggest additions, deletions, or rewrites; and query anything that is unclear.
I prefer to work with a completed draft. This is not ghostwriting. $0.064/word
When the material is organized the way you like it but you still need significant help getting the text where it needs to be, substantive editing is the service you need. With substantive editing, I read the manuscript twice and provide an in-depth assessment of character development, plot, narrative arc, pacing, and dialogue, along with guidance for fixing problem areas. I also correct punctuation, grammar, syntax, and capitalization. This service is more in-depth than copyediting but not as all-encompassing as developmental editing. $.040/word
This service is best performed after your manuscript has a set beginning, middle, and end. In copyediting, I read your manuscript twice to correct grammar, punctuation, spelling, style, word choice, and sense; ensure consistency; evaluate timeline, plot, and pacing; rewrite some sentences; suggest additions and deletions as needed; and query anything that is unclear. $0.027/word
Proofreading can be done in Microsoft Word as the last stage before conversion to ebook or after the book pages have been laid out. I read through your manuscript or page proofs one time to correct minor errors, such as spelling, punctuation, syntax, and grammar; check the table of contents against the text; check running heads (if book has been typeset); and ensure consistency. $.018/word
If you have a completed draft but need some outside input on where to go next, a manuscript evaluation can help. I make one pass through the manuscript to provide in-depth feedback on strengths and weakness in the writing, ways to improve marketability of the project, and level of edit required. $.015/word
With 25 years of experience in the publishing industry, I can manage your book production process from manuscript to final product.
